Weight Loss Patient Testimonials

Nicole D., age 44

Weight was always an issue for me. When I was in high school, I couldn't get a date for the prom because I was so big. I had arthritis pain in my neck and back, and neuropathy where my arms would get numb. When we took a vacation in Jamaica, I couldn't do the things my husband wanted to do – I was too heavy for the zip line and the ATVs. I didn't feel good about myself. Diets weren't working, so first I tried a different surgical program, but the people there weren't nice and they didn't seem like they cared about me.

My aunt had a successful surgery with Dr. Meilahn, so I called Chestnut Hill Hospital. Everyone in the bariatric program there was so nice and supportive - Dr. Meilahn and Laurie even gave me their personal cell phone numbers and told me to call them any time of day. And Carlie, the dietitian, taught me how to eat healthier and read labels, and now I'm teaching that to my daughter and she feels so much better about herself. After my gastric bypass, I lost two sizes in just three weeks, and I'm still losing weight - it doesn't feel real. I can breathe much better and I don't need my asthma pump anymore. I have more energy and can walk seven miles a day. Now I can do everything - even the zip line!

The surgical team at Chestnut Hill Hospital was great! I love them - they're so nice and I think having lifetime care with them will be so good to keep me on track. I feel so overwhelmed and so happy that I finally got a chance to have this surgery. It's amazing!

Sintia P., age 23

All my life I was big, but I was healthy and played softball. Then about five years ago I gained so much weight that I couldn't be active and it made me sad. I didn't feel comfortable in my body anymore. Now, I'm having medical issues and I have to have my gall bladder removed. I know my family has hypertension and diabetes, and I don't want to wait until I have a chronic condition. I want to be healthy for my son.

From my first call to the Chestnut Hill weight loss surgery program, everyone was awesome. Dr. Meilahn is really knowledgeable and experienced and I liked how he explained everything to me and then gave me options for my surgery - they let you decide. Laurie is phenomenal - she's so friendly and supportive. The dietitian has taught me a whole new way of eating and every time I meet with her I learn something new. They're all so nice, it's like a family - you know they really care about you and want you to have a successful surgery, and then they'll help you stay successful for the rest of your life. I know I can call them anytime, forever.

This whole process has been so smooth because of them. They're always there for me. They make you feel confident. I feel good putting my life in their hands. I haven't even had my surgery yet, and they've already helped me out so much. I'm so excited. I can't wait to buy new clothes and play softball again and play with my son. Now, I can teach my son a new way of eating and living.

I didn't realize how much my weight was out of control until I was rushed to the hospital with congestive heart failure. I was in the intensive care unit for over a week, and while I was there I learned I had Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. At that time I weighed 400 pounds, and the doctors told me that if I didn't lose weight, I could be dead in less than two years. I started thinking about bariatric surgery while I was in the hospital because it was a life-altering experience. That's when I decided I was ready to do something about my weight.

I did a lot of research and went to three other bariatric programs before two different hospitals referred me to Dr. Meilahn at Chestnut Hill Hospital. I talked to Laurie first and she was so accommodating – now I call her my angel. Then I met Dr. Meilahn and his knowledge was excellent. I was impressed by how serious he was. He spent a lot of time with me to help decide which surgery would be right for me. His experience made me feel comfortable.

Every time I went to the office before surgery, and now even after my operation, Carlie teaches me how to make good food choices. She taught me how to read labels and the fine print - she's so informative. It's a bigger thing than just getting surgery...the support here at the Chestnut Hill bariatric program has been awesome. I'm glad I chose this program because I didn't get this feeling anywhere else. Everywhere else I felt just like a patient or a number, but here the whole team is exceptional. Dr. Meilahn and Laurie, the dietitian, the nurses, the receptionist - everyone makes you feel like family. This program has set me up for a better life.
